AMD to Invest Up to $5 Bn in Anthropic, Supply Up to 2 GW of MI450 GPUs

AMD and Anthropic have announced a strategic partnership under which Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD’s Instinct MI450 Series GPUs in AMD’s Helios rack-scale systems, while AMD has committed to make an equity investment of up to $5 billion in the AI company. The first gigawatt of deployments is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027. The announcement expands Anthropic’s use of AMD hardware, building on its existing deployment of AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs. Anthropic said it will deploy AMD Helios systems powered by Instinct MI455X GPUs, EPYC Venice CPUs, Pensando networking and ROCm software to support training and inference for its Claude family of models. The companies will also launch a multi-year engineering collaboration focused on software optimisation. Anthropic will use Claude to optimise workloads for AMD Instinct GPUs and accelerate development of AMD’s ROCm software stack. AMD, in turn, will adopt Claude across its engineering and product development teams. “The collaboration brings together Anthropic’s leadership in frontier AI with the full strength of AMD high-performance computing,” said Lisa Su, chair and CEO of AMD. “Together, we will accelerate AI adoption at scale and establish Helios as a major platform for the next generation of AI infrastructure.” Tom Brown, Co-founder and Chief Compute Officer at Anthropic, said compute capacity remains central to the company's ability to train and serve Claude. “By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing the capacity we need and optimising it for training and serving Claude,” Brown said. “Running across a diversified range of hardware lets us map the right workloads to the right hardware.” The announcement comes as Anthropic continues to secure dedicated computing capacity through long-term infrastructure partnerships. The company already relies on Amazon Web Services as its primary cloud provider and has infrastructure agreements with Google Cloud . In recent months, it has also signed deals for additional compute capacity with SpaceX , Broadcom and other partners as demand for Claude has increased. Anthropic, founded in 2021, has become one of the world’s most valuable AI startups. In February, it raised $30 billion in a Series G funding round at a $380 billion post-money valuation. For AMD, the partnership represents one of its largest AI infrastructure deployments to date and strengthens its position in the market for AI accelerators, where it competes with NVIDIA and other chipmakers.
