Delhi to add 2,800 new AC electric buses under PM E-Drive scheme from 2027

Delhi government approves 2,800 new AC electric buses to reduce pollution and enhance public transport, with operations starting in 2027.

The Delhi government has approved the induction of 2,800 new air-conditioned low-floor electric buses under Phase-I of the PM E-Drive scheme, with operations set to begin next year. This initiative aims to reduce pollution and strengthen the public transport network in the national capital, according to the Chief Minister’s Office. Plans are also underway to expand Delhi’s public transportation fleet to around 14,000 buses by 2028-29 as part of broader efforts to enhance infrastructure and decrease pollution levels. Earlier this month, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) launched an experimental bus service, Route 753 Ext, to serve commuters travelling between Central Delhi and residential areas in West Delhi. The route provides direct connectivity for residents of Janakpuri, Vikaspuri, Hastsal, Shiv Vihar, Uttam Nagar, Hari Nagar, and neighbouring localities to Mori Gate, Kashmere Gate, Old Delhi Railway Station, and New Delhi Railway Station, an official statement said. Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh commented, “The launch of the new route reflects the government’s commitment to making public transport more accessible and commuter-friendly.” He added that under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s leadership, the government is continuously expanding public transport services to ensure residents have access to a safe, convenient, and citizen-centric transport system. PMO Advisor Tarun Kapoor highlighted the importance of promoting electric vehicles across India, stating, “We want to promote electric vehicles across the country. All stakeholders, whether state governments or industry, have an important role to play. We want to reduce our dependence on imported oil.” He emphasized that reducing reliance on imported oil will require cooperative efforts from the Centre, state governments, and industry.
