Embangweni-Engalaweni Road in Mzimba District to cost K94bn

Minister of Transport and Public Works Jappie Mhango says government plans to resume works on the 39.2 kilometre Embangweni-Edingeni-Engalaweni Road in Mzimba District nine months after the project stalled due to funding challenges. Speaking on Saturday when he inspected the Embangweni-Edingeni section of the road, he said Treasury is working to secure funds to continue the project, which forms part of the larger Jenda to Embangweni-Edingeni-Engalaweni-Manyamula -Mzimba Boma Road. Only the Jenda to Embangweni section has been completed so far. “We are optimistic that works on the road will resume because the Ministry of Finance has assured us of sourcing funds to complete the Embangweni to Edingeni- Engalaweni stretch,” said Mhango. Roads Authority chief executive officer Joel Longwe said China Railway 20 (CR20) will continue with the Embangweni-Engalaweni Project under a K94.6 billion contract. “The construction will take 24 months and the contractor will resume works this week as government sorts out payment issues,” he said. CR20 site engineer Yue Guang said the company was committed to completing the project within the stated period if government ensures uninterrupted payments. Mzimba South West legislator Khumbo Kachali commended government for the commitment to resume the project, saying it will improve mobility. On his part, Traditional Authority Mzukuzuku urged the government to “walk the talk” on the road project.
