A fake prophet, Godwin Sunday Ajuluchukwucheya, popularly known as Prophet Sunday Koboko, has been convicted and sentenced to one year imprisonment for defrauding members of his church of N136.4 million through false pretences and fraudulent investment schemes. The conviction was secured by the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before Justice H.O. Eya of the Enugu State High Court sitting in Independence Layout, Enugu. Ajuluchukwucheya was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on obtaining by false pretence and stealing the sum of N136,436,000 from unsuspecting church members. He pleaded guilty to the charges when they were read in court. Following his guilty plea, EFCC counsel, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, Rotimi Ajobiewe, urged the court to convict and sentence him accordingly. Justice Eya subsequently sentenced him to one year imprisonment with an option of a N500,000 fine. The court also ordered the forfeiture of the convict’s landed property, covered by a Customary Certificate of Occupancy registered in Enugu, to the Federal Government through the EFCC. The property is to be sold, with the proceeds used to compensate victims of the fraud. The EFCC said investigations began after receiving a petition from Mrs. Ngene Nkiruka Jane, who alleged that the self-acclaimed prophet deceived her into believing he possessed the power to resurrect her late husband. She told investigators that she paid N6.7 million for the supposed resurrection and participation in the fraudulent investment scheme. Another victim, Okey Uwakwe, alleged that the convict collected N6,231,400 from him after claiming he could spiritually compel his brother, who had lived abroad since 1997, to return to Nigeria. According to the anti-graft agency, more members of the ministry later came forward with similar complaints, revealing that the convict regularly deceived followers into purchasing so-called spiritual products, including “miracle stickers,” “spiritual dragon,” and “Holy Ghost Thunder,” with false promises of prosperity and supernatural breakthroughs.
