Fire crews salvage home in West Sand Lake vehicle fire

Firefighters save home in West Sand Lake Firefighters were able to save a home after what started as a vehicle fire that quickly spread to the garage. WEST SAND LAKE, N.Y. (WNYT) — Firefighters were able to save a home after what started as a vehicle fire that quickly spread to the garage. Around 1 p.m. today, fire crews were called to a vehicle fire on Springer Road in West Sand Lake. When they arrived, the fire had already taken over part of the home. Multiple mutual aid companies were called in to assist with the fire. No injuries have been reported from the fire. The family is missing a cat who escaped during the fire but is believed to be alive. One firefighter was examined at an ambulance during the fire for heat exhaustion but is doing okay. The residents of the home are not able to stay there in the time being. They will be staying in a hotel tonight, West Sand Lake Fire Chief Lee Crosier said. Firefighters were able to salvage the majority of the home, Chief Crosier said. He said the fire mainly affected the garage, kitchen, and second floor, and only 1/4 of the home was destroyed. The fire started in an old conversion van that Chief Crosier said the family had been doing work on.
