Great Southern Mining (ASX: GSN) has started diamond drilling at the Mt Dillon target within its Edinburgh Park project in northern Queensland, marking the first test of the project’s highest-priority prospect. The initial program of up to 1,300m is being managed and funded by G-Ex Resources—a wholly owned subsidiary of Gold Fields—under an earn-in arrangement that allows Gold Fields to spend up to A$15 million for a 75% project interest. Located about 100 kilometres southeast of Townsville, Edinburgh Park is targeting high and low epithermal gold-silver systems, porphyry gold-copper-molybdenum mineralisation, and intrusion-related gold (IRG) systems within its volcanic and basement geology. Mt Dillon is also considered prospective for IRG systems, with drilling designed to test shallow chargeability and resistivity anomalies identified by induced polarisation (IP) surveys beneath a preserved silicified lithocap. Great Southern expects the scale of the project to generate further targets beyond Mt Dillon as geochemical and geophysical work continues through 2026 and 2027. Large Chargeability Anomaly Gradient array IP surveying completed in early 2025 defined a large chargeability anomaly directly below Mt Dillon that may indicate sulphide minerals associated with a preserved intrusive system. A follow-up IP section identified the chargeable response about 200m to 300m below surface, with a deeper resistivity anomaly potentially associated with pervasive hydrothermal alteration within a porphyry system. The planned holes share a collar location but will be drilled at different azimuths to test the anomaly from separate angles, with proposed depths of 575m and 700m. Drilling is expected to take four to six weeks, with core logging, photography and sampling to follow as work progresses. Volcanic-Based Target The prospect sits within volcanic rocks of the Lizzie Creek Volcanics, and contains several square kilometres of intensely altered felsic volcanics trending north to northeast. Great Southern interprets the alteration, metal depletion, and preserved topographic high as characteristics consistent with the leached lithocap above a potentially large intrusive system. Lower ground around the Mt Dillon outlier contains strong clay-pyrite-silica alteration and predominantly pyrite sulphides generally comprising 3% to 10% of the rock, while the mapped mineral assemblage is consistent with a high-temperature, low-pH hydrothermal system. Planned future exploration includes further IP surveying, a ground gravity survey, and ongoing surface geochemical sampling and mapping to develop the next group of drill targets.
