Harare Driver Arrested Over Taxi Robbery Spree Targeting Women A 27-year-old Harare man has been arrested and taken to court for allegedly using a fake taxi operation to lure and rob female passengers across the capital. Joshua Ruchiki appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo facing six counts of robbery and was remanded in custody while police continue with investigations. The State alleges that Ruchiki worked with accomplices to target women who boarded his pink Nissan Note, registration number AHG 1836, before stealing their valuables and leaving them stranded along roadsides. Investigations reportedly led to Ruchiki’s arrest, with police recovering the Nissan Note believed to have been used in the alleged robberies. Several handbags and 10 wallets were also recovered, with some items later identified by complainants as their property. The total value of goods allegedly stolen is estimated at about US$12 000, while property worth approximately US$3 000 has since been recovered. Women Allegedly Targeted Across Harare The State alleges that Ruchiki acted together with Kimberly Kumbeze, Tanyaradzwa Nyashinga and another suspect identified as Given Manhovo, who remains on the run. Prosecutors told the court that on April 14, a woman boarded the vehicle at the corner of Churchill Avenue and Hudson Road in Alexandra Park before she was allegedly robbed of a cellphone and a handbag containing US$75. In another incident on April 28, a passenger who entered the same vehicle along Second Street Extension in the Harare CBD was allegedly robbed of her cellphone and handbag. The State further states that on May 2, another woman lost two cellphones after boarding the vehicle in Marlborough along Quendon Road. More Robbery Cases Reported The alleged robbery spree continued on May 7 when another passenger was reportedly picked up along King George Road in Avondale and later robbed of a Samsung A15 cellphone. Two more incidents were allegedly recorded on May 20 in Avondale and along Harare Drive near KK Tiles. One complainant lost an iPhone XR, while another was reportedly robbed of two cellphones, US$330 cash and other personal belongings. Ruchiki remains in custody as investigations continue.
