Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi New Delhi, Jul 26: Alcohol consumption does not appear to be associated with an increased or reduced risk of developing hip osteoarthritis, according to a new study that examined the relationship between drinking habits and the common joint disorder. Researchers found no significant evidence linking alcohol intake with the onset or progression of hip osteoarthritis, suggesting that alcohol consumption is unlikely to play a direct role in the development of the condition. Hip osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease characterised by the gradual breakdown of cartilage in the hip joint, leading to pain, stiffness and reduced mobility. While established risk factors include ageing, obesity, joint injuries and genetics, the role of alcohol has remained unclear. The findings indicate that, after accounting for other contributing factors, alcohol consumption did not significantly influence the likelihood of developing hip osteoarthritis. Researchers noted that the study adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting lifestyle factors such as maintaining a healthy weight, regular physical activity and preventing joint injuries are more important in reducing the risk of hip osteoarthritis than alcohol consumption. However, they emphasised that excessive alcohol intake remains associated with numerous other health risks, including liver disease, cardiovascular conditions and certain cancers, and should continue to be consumed in moderation in line with public health recommendations. The researchers called for further long-term studies involving diverse populations to better understand the complex factors that contribute to the development of hip osteoarthritis.
