James Griffnow and Judy Fankhanel named Becker County Outstanding Senior Citizens

DETROIT LAKES — The 2026 Becker County Outstanding Senior Citizens are Judy Fankhanel of Detroit Lakes and James Griffnow of Height of Land Township. They were among 17 people nominated for the award, and were recognized at a ceremony Thursday at the Becker County Fair. According to emcee Lisa Stroschein – the Becker County senior coordinator with Mahube-Otwa – Fankhanel’s nomination stated that “her commitment extends beyond the church walls, as she helps provide meals, fellowship, and support to individuals and families throughout the community. Her willingness to serve wherever needed, and her quiet dedication to helping others, exemplify the true spirit of volunteerism and make her a deserving nominee for the Outstanding Senior Citizen Award.” ADVERTISEMENT James Griffnow, she added, has spent more than five decades “investing in the youth and families of Becker County through his volunteer leadership with 4-H.” Starting in 1971, Stroschein said, Griffnow has “served as a club leader, Becker County 4-H project leader, and longtime member and treasurer of the Upper Livestock Auction Committee. Through his mentorship, leadership, and encouragement, he has positively influenced generations of young people, teaching responsibility, leadership, and life skills. His enduring commitment to youth development and community service has left a lasting impact on Becker County and makes him an outstanding recipient.” Before the Outstanding Seniors award ceremony, winners of the red, white and blue pie contest and planter contest were honored, and candidates for political office briefly addressed the crowd under the big tent at the Becker County Fairgrounds. Candidates who spoke included State Sen. Rob Kupec, Becker County Commissioner Erica Jepson, Becker County sheriff candidates Luke Sweere and Shane Richard, and Becker County auditor-treasurer candidates Darin O. Halvorson , Amy Rosing , Kim Frederick , Nathan Martin , and Zac Baer , listed in the order they spoke. Becker County Sheriff Todd Glander, who is retiring at the end of this year, also gave his thanks and said an emotional goodbye to folks under the Big Tent.
