Kerala Expects ₹10,000 Crore Maritime Investments Under Mission Samudra: CM Satheesan

Kerala is expecting investments of around ₹10,000 crore in the first phase of maritime infrastructure projects under its ambitious ‘Mission Samudra’ initiative, Chief Minister V D Satheesan announced on Wednesday. Addressing a press conference, the Chief Minister said the state government is actively pursuing a series of maritime projects aimed at strengthening Kerala’s position as a key maritime and logistics hub. As part of the initiative, the government has proposed the establishment of an Oceanarium in Kochi , an International Maritime Museum , and several port-sector investment projects , whose economic feasibility is currently being evaluated. “In the first phase itself, we expect investments of around ₹10,000 crore under these initiatives,” Satheesan said. The Chief Minister also addressed the recent controversy surrounding the Tata Group’s proposed shipbuilding venture in Kerala. Rejecting reports that he had denied holding discussions with the conglomerate, Satheesan clarified that representatives of the Tata Group had met him to discuss issues related to their proposed investments in the state. He said certain issues concerning the proposed vessel-building project involving Malabar Cements and Cochin Port had remained pending but were subsequently resolved by the state government. “The government has resolved those issues, and the company representatives responded positively. We have urged the Tata Group to bring more investments to Kerala,” he said. Satheesan further highlighted the government’s commitment to facilitating investments by noting that an inter-agency dispute within the Industries Department concerning the establishment of a container fire station was resolved within 24 hours. The clarification comes after recent remarks by the Chief Minister that the Tata Group would establish its first shipbuilding venture in Kerala and that ship repair and maintenance facilities would also be developed in the state. Following reports that a Tata Group spokesperson had stated no such project was currently under consideration, the state government clarified that the Chief Minister’s remarks reflected Kerala’s long-term maritime development vision under Mission Samudra and were not intended to indicate that a final investment agreement had already been concluded. State Industries Minister P K Kunhalikutty had also confirmed that discussions with Tata Group representatives took place during the recent Assembly session regarding the proposed shipbuilding project and released photographs of the meeting. The Mission Samudra initiative is expected to play a significant role in enhancing Kerala’s maritime infrastructure, attracting private investment, and supporting the growth of shipbuilding, ship repair, port development, and the state’s broader blue economy.
