More than 37,000 Year 5 and Year 7 students across Fiji will sit the 2026 Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (LANA), which begins tomorrow. The national assessment starts with the literacy paper on Tuesday, July 21, followed by the numeracy paper on Wednesday, July 22. A total of 17,945 Year 5 students will sit the assessment at 717 centres, while 19,336 Year 7 students will be assessed at 720 centres. Related stories Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro encouraged students to do their best and view the assessment as an opportunity to strengthen their literacy and numeracy skills. “As you prepare for the 2026 Literacy and Numeracy Assessment, remember that this exercise marks not only the result of your determination and perseverance but also a stepping stone towards enhancing your literacy and numeracy skills,” Mr Radrodro said. LANA is a national diagnostic assessment designed to measure students’ foundational literacy and numeracy skills and identify areas where schools may need to provide additional support. The assessment is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday, with catch-up sessions to be held on July 23 and 24 for students who miss the scheduled papers. Mr Radrodro also called on parents and guardians to support their children during the assessment period. He urged school heads to ensure the assessment was conducted according to the ministry’s guidelines, saying the results would help schools develop intervention programmes to improve literacy and numeracy outcomes at primary level. Last year, 18,397 Year 5 students at 722 centres and 19,559 Year 7 students at 720 centres sat the assessment. In 2024, 18,835 Year 5 students at 718 centres and 18,340 Year 7 students at 705 centres took part.
