Photo: Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission Ministerial approval will continue to be required for fuel price changes despite proposed reforms aimed at strengthening the independence of the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), as fuel remains a critical commodity for Fiji's economy. Speaking during the FCCC consultation at the Nausori Market Hall yesterday, FCCC chief executive officer Senikavika Jiuta said the proposed legislation is designed to protect the commission's independent decision-making while recognising that some regulated products have significant national economic implications. Ms Jiuta said fuel pricing must continue to be endorsed by the responsible minister because of its importance to businesses, electricity generation and the wider economy. Related stories "Fuel is an essential item to drive our economy. If there is no fuel, eventually businesses and critical services will be affected," she said. While the proposed FCCC Bill would prevent policymakers from interfering with the commission's independent pricing decisions, Ms Jiuta said there was a need to balance that independence with products that have a broader impact on the national economy. She said the FCCC Board would continue to set prices for products such as cooking gas, while fuel prices would remain subject to ministerial approval because of their wider economic significance.
