Nahid calls for swift execution of verdict National Citizen Party Convener Nahid Islam yesterday called for the implementation of the verdict in the Abu Sayed killing case, as well as state reforms in line with the outcome of the July referendum. The opposition chief whip was paying tribute to Abu Sayed at his grave in Pirganj, Rangpur. Speaking to journalists after visiting the grave at Babanpara village, Nahid described Abu Sayed as “the foremost” among those killed during the July revolution and said his death on July 16, 2024, marked a turning point in the student movement. He said Abu Sayed’s sacrifice transformed the student-public movement into a mass uprising. Nahid also remembered the 1,400 people killed and nearly 30,000 injured during the movement, saying the country must establish a discrimination-free and justice-based state to honour their sacrifices. Referring to the Abu Sayed murder case, he said the trial court had delivered its verdict, but it has yet to be implemented as an appeal remains pending. Nahid also said Sheikh Hasina, whom he identified as the principal accused in the case, had been sentenced to death by the court. He expressed hope that the government would bring her back to the country and implement the verdict. On state reform, Nahid said justice, reform and elections were the three main demands following the July uprising. He alleged that despite public support for reform in the July referendum, the government has failed to implement its outcome or make progress on the promised July Charter.
