Puerto Vallarta’s New Electric Bus System Nears Completion

Puerto Vallarta is one step closer to a cleaner, more modern public transportation network as the Government of Jalisco completes the final preparations for its new electric bus system, a project designed to improve mobility while reducing environmental impact. State officials recently toured the project’s key facilities to review the final stages of construction, including the new charging station where the city’s fleet of electric buses will be powered. The inspection was led by Jalisco Secretary of Transportation Diego Monrás Villaseñor and Secretary of Infrastructure and Public Works David Zamora Bueno, alongside Luis Romero Chávez, president of the concessionaire Transportes Unidos del Pacífico (UnibusPV). The charging facility, located near the Municipal Police Station and slaughterhouse in Ixtapa, represents an investment of 22,160,264 pesos. It was made possible after the Puerto Vallarta City Council approved the 10-year loan of a 10,100-square-meter property to the Urban Electric Train System (Siteur) in April, providing the space needed to charge and store the new electric fleet. Monrás Villaseñor shared the progress on social media, noting that transportation and infrastructure teams began the day inspecting the final details of the electromobility system, which he said will begin serving Puerto Vallarta soon. The project has gained momentum in recent weeks with the arrival of some of the city’s new fully electric buses. Among them are articulated buses that will operate along the busy tourist corridor and serve the University Center of the Coast (CUCosta), while additional electric units will strengthen existing routes throughout the municipality, expanding service and improving reliability for daily passengers. Although the Jalisco Ministry of Transportation has not yet announced an official launch date, the completion of infrastructure, ongoing inspections, and arrival of the new vehicles all indicate that the system is entering its final phase. Unofficial reports suggest the electric bus network could begin operating within the next few weeks, possibly during a visit to Puerto Vallarta by Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro, who is expected to preside over the project’s official inauguration. Once in service, the new electromobility system is expected to reduce vehicle emissions while providing residents and visitors with quieter, more comfortable, and more efficient transportation.
