Rail link to Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur disrupted for a week as restoration work continues

Guwahati: Rail connectivity between Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, southern Assam and the rest of the country has remained disrupted for nearly a week after heavy monsoon rains damaged railway tracks on the crucial Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials said on Thursday. The disruption occurred near New Harangajao station in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, where continuous rainfall caused the ground beneath two of the three railway lines to subside over a stretch of nearly 300 metres. An NFR official said restoration work is being carried out on a war footing, with railway engineers, workers and heavy machinery deployed at the site. Until the damaged tracks are restored, train services are being operated only through the third line under enhanced safety protocols and constant monitoring. The NFR has suspended night-time movement of passenger trains through the affected section between 7 pm and 5 am as a precautionary measure. During the day, trains are being allowed to pass at regulated speeds under continuous supervision. Officials said normal train operations will resume only after the damaged tracks are fully restored and declared safe for traffic. The Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section is the only railway corridor connecting Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and parts of southern Assam with the rest of the country, a report said. Any disruption on the route has a significant impact on passenger travel and the movement of essential commodities, including foodgrains, fuel and construction materials. Railway infrastructure in the hilly terrain of Dima Hasao remains particularly vulnerable during the June-September monsoon season, when landslides, flooding and soil erosion frequently damage tracks and embankments, leading to recurring disruptions in rail services across the Northeast.
