Registrations open for detox

Surf Coast’s community should get in early and secure their spots for this year’s Detox Your Home Torquay. Torquay Works Depot will host the annual state government event, providing residents a safe and easy way to dispose of unwanted household chemicals. Surf Coast Shire councillor Joel Grist said the event gave people the opportunity to remove old chemicals from their home while helping protect the environment, and that places were expected to fill up fast. “This is always a popular event, and it regularly books out, so get in early,” he said. “Many of us have unwanted or expired chemicals tucked away in the shed, garage or under the sink. “Detox Your Home makes it easy to get rid of these items safely, keeping them out of landfill and protecting waterways and environment.” The event has collected more than 14.5 tonnes of hazardous household chemicals during the last five years, including 2315kg at last year’s event. People will be able to drop off household cleaning supplies, garden chemicals, and garage products, including machine oil and brake fluid, during the event. Paint, cosmetics and oils, including cooking oils, will no longer be accepted at the event, with people encouraged to dispose of paints free of charge at the new Paintback facility at the Anglesea Transfer Station.
