Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli save reputation but IND lose series with loss at Lord's

Rohit Sharma etched his name into the record books with a sensational century at Lord's, becoming the first Indian batter to score an ODI hundred at the iconic venue. However, his landmark knock was not enough to prevent India from suffering a 27-run defeat against England in the third and final ODI, as the hosts clinched the three-match series 2-1. Chasing a daunting target of 388, Rohit led India's fightback with a brilliant 138 off 110 balls, smashing 17 fours and five sixes. He shared a 147-run opening stand with Shubman Gill, who scored 77, keeping India firmly in the contest for much of the chase. Rohit's century also saw him surpass Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record, making him the first Indian to score an ODI hundred at Lord's. In addition, he overtook Virat Kohli for the most 50-plus ODI scores by a visiting batter in England. Earlier, England posted a mammoth 387/3, powered by Ben Duckett's record-breaking 141 — the highest individual ODI score at Lord's. Jacob Bethell chipped in with 91, while Joe Root remained unbeaten on 74. A late flourish from Jos Buttler helped England register the highest ODI total at the historic venue. Despite Rohit's heroic effort, India lost momentum after his dismissal, with Sam Curran claiming four wickets to derail the chase. India eventually finished on 360/7, handing England a 27-run victory and the ODI series. After the match, former India captain MS Dhoni met Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, congratulating both players and reserving special praise for Rohit's magnificent century. According to reports, Dhoni was emotional amid the recent retirement speculation surrounding Rohit but also expressed disappointment over India's defeat. Cricket journalist Vimal Kumar later claimed that Dhoni said Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should never be judged by their age. He reportedly believes both stalwarts remain fit, motivated and have plenty of cricket left in them. Dhoni is also said to have emphasised that experienced players like Rohit and Virat continue to be invaluable to Indian cricket, with much more to contribute to the national team.
